Sukkot NW 2004 celebration began Thursday evening, September 30th, 2004, with a Sukkot Welcome Reception at 6pm in the Curry Showcase Building at the Event Center on the Beach. Arriving by car, RV, train and airplane from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, Michigan, West Virginia and Canada, we gathered together to celebrate this season of our joy!
Each day began with prayer, Hebrew lessons, dance workshop, a morning service and teaching. On the three Shabbat days of this festival (the first day of Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret, and the weekly 7th day Shabbat) we gathered for Erev Shabbat (Evening of the Sabbath) as well as afternoon teaching sessions. On the other days, our afternoons were free time from lunch through dinner and we gathered each evening for workshops, sukkah parties, Davidic Dance, open late-night Torah studies and fellowship.
We learned from a variety of interesting and inspiring speakers on various topics and participated in separate women’s and men’s discussion forums and open forum Q&A. In the daily Hebrew class, we learned the Hebrew AlephBet and the vowel points and were able to read Hebrew words by the end of the festival. Basic steps and worship dances were taught and we danced each day. We celebrated marriage renewals in the sukkah on the 7th day of the Feast and participated in Menorah lighting as well as water pouring ceremonies. Shemini Atzeret ended as the 7th day Shabbat began, so we stayed an extra day to share Shabbat together and celebrate Simchat Torah.
Our children learned about the Moedim (Appointed Times/Holidays), the Mishkan (Tabernacle), Yeshua the Living Torah, Shofars, Praise & Worship, making tambourines and worship banners, and tying tzitzits.
As is our tradition, one day during the week was an open family day with no meetings scheduled. We took a group trip up the Rogue River on Jerry’s Rogue River Jet Boats, filling two of their boats and enjoying a meal stop in the small historic town of Agness. Some drove to tour the redwoods and others enjoyed quiet time on the beach or shopping.
